What do children in care look for in a Foster Carer?

A lot of our blogs feature our fantastic carers, sharing advice, their experiences and their stories.

We wanted to get another perspective of Fostering, so this time we spoke with one of the teenagers that has been placed with one of the Fostering Ltd families.  She has had a great experience and we asked her what traits she thinks a Foster Carer should have:

Be Caring

She feels that foster carers should have empathy, each case is different and young people come from different backgrounds.  How you handle things is a personal choice but as long as you show you care that’s enough.

Treat you like you are normal

Whatever reason that the young people are in care, they don’t want to be treated any different to others.

Be genuine

Honesty is often the best policy, so being honest and genuine is something that will be appreciated by the young person/people

Make you feel like part of the family

Feeling like they are part of the family is important. We have talked before about having new family traditions and family activities can really help the children or young people settle in.

Do it because you enjoy it not because it’s your job

It is important to the young people that you foster because you enjoy it.
